One is a Sqaurdian leader Mahendra Pratap Singh and other is washing clothes in her house, one is having everything he wants, other is ill treated as she has done some sin and the sin is she is a girl. But, when we compare something we need two parties and here we have only boys, therefore the question arises 'Where are the girls of India'? Yes, I am talking about lot being talked about but nothing much being done about issue - Gender Disparity in India.
New census data in India shows there are 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six. Gender inequality has developed along with economic success. Technologies such as the use of ultrasound helps in knowing whether a boy will be born or the girl, and the moments its a girl, well then she is straightaway aborted because although its an age of modernization, she is still considered a burden for the family in some states. Even though India has passed laws and ordinances against this practice, the country has failed to have any success against female infanticide. And, in the villages where facilities such as ultrasound are not available, girls are born but their mothers themselves make them eat poison. Such is a condition of India- which is among the fastest developing Countries of the world. Earlier this year, a newborn baby girl was left to die by her mother in some bushes, only to be eaten by a few hungry stray dogs. This is just one of the stories we know of, but there are many others.Even English-speaking and rich Indians engage in female infanticide, although they must have studied the great women leaders we had in past and what progress women are making in the present scenario. Undoubtedly, they know where women of today is heading and what she can contribute to the country in the future as we have some good examples here like Pratibha Patil, the first woman President of India, Lata Mangeshkar, a living singing legend. Its a long long list if I continue to name the successful women in India. But, as they think who wants the burden of a girl child? then they have to spend in her education, upbringing, marriage etc. What they don' t understand is the simple fact that today girls if given proper education can become so much self independent that she can easily bear the expenditure of her marriage. If she is educated, then she can educate her whole family, she can look after the needs of her family and make them proud.
Married and pregnant women face pressure from society to give birth to a male, even if they want to have daughters. Women are harassed and forced to engage in female infanticide by in-laws and community members.
Male children are seen as future income earners and caretakers of their aging parents, but nowadays they are the ones who send them old age homes but women is the one who always worries for her family and can look after their needs. Then, comes the question of dowry also, if the girl is not killed by her family, some girls are even burnt because she has come with less dowry.
What is the solution? Till when will these inequalities remain? When can we have Gender equality- which is only a word written in the constitution, but never followed anywhere. Yes, I agree that women are finding reservation in some places, but male chauvinism still prevails at workplaces. There is a stronger need of some laws and reforms by the Government to encourage gender equality, to support women, such practices such as ultrasound should be banned and the people who follows it should be severely punished. Otherwise, I am afraid that Gender equality will remain only a word in the constitution and never be implemented.
